The Chief Minister is appointed by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri from among the Members of the State Legislative Assembly, based on his judgment of who commands the majority’s confidence. The Chief Minister chairs the State Executive Council Meeting (MMKN), which convenes weekly at the Chief Minister’s Office.

The Chief Minister performs his duties and functions as the head of the state government while also addressing the needs of the community, especially within his constituency. He shall not hold any project directly nor engage in business dealings with any commercial entities.

The current Chief Minister of Melaka is YAB Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf bin Yusoh, who is the 13th Chief Minister of Melaka. He was appointed on 31 March 2023.
