Melaka is set to become the focus of global attention as it has been chosen to host the World Tourism Day (WTD) and World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2025, scheduled to take place from 27 to 29 September 2025. Themed “Tourism & Sustainable Transformation”, this programme is organised by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) and the Melaka State Government.
Melaka as a Global Centre for Sustainable Tourism
The selection of Melaka as the host location reflects international recognition of the state's capability as a world-class tourist destination. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Melaka offers a unique blend of history, culture, and modern innovation, making it the ideal destination to highlight sustainable tourism.
“Tourism & Sustainable Transformation”
This world-class event carries a theme that is highly relevant to today’s challenges — “Tourism & Sustainable Transformation”. The theme emphasises the crucial role of the tourism sector in supporting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable transformation.
Since its inception in 1980, the World Tourism Day has served as an annual event aimed at raising global awareness of the importance of tourism as a driver of economic, social, and cultural development. In tandem, the World Tourism Conference complements this by providing a platform for global leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and explore innovative solutions to current tourism challenges.
Benefits for the Nation and the World
This event is expected to attract more than 1,000 participants from both domestic and international backgrounds, including global tourism leaders, policymakers, academics, and the media. It also provides Malaysia, particularly Melaka, with an opportunity to showcase its tourism and cultural innovations to the world.
Enhancing Malaysia’s Image on the Global Stage
As the host nation, Malaysia has a unique opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable tourism while promoting the country's attractions on the global stage. Through strategic collaboration with UNWTO and international partners, this event will serve as a platform to shape a more sustainable and inclusive future for the global tourism sector.
