The five colours featured in the state's emblem represent that Melaka is a state within Malaysia. The five kris depicted in the emblem symbolise the five legendary and courageous warriors of Melaka’s past: Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Lekiu, Hang Lekir, and Hang Kasturi. The crescent moon and five-pointed star above the centre of the emblem signify that Islam is the official religion of the state.
In addition, the emblem also features a tree and two mousedeer, referencing the legend of how Melaka was founded. Parameswara witnessed a fight between a mousedeer and a dog while he was resting under a Melaka tree. He was impressed by the strength and wit of the small mousedeer. Despite its size, the mousedeer was brave, and Parameswara ultimately decided to settle in that very spot and name the place after the Melaka tree.
