The institution of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka is the highest office in the state of Melaka. States that have a Yang di-Pertua Negeri are those without a Sultan or Monarch. This institution is practised based on an appointment made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong after consultation with the Chief Minister. According to the Constitution of the State of Melaka, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri is appointed for a single term of four years and may be extended as deemed appropriate. He is not permitted to own businesses or earn profits and is also prohibited from active involvement in any commercial activities.
Tun Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam was born at Melaka Hospital on 24 August 1949 and is the 7th and current Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka since 2020. He married YABhg. Toh Puan Datuk Wira Hajah Asmah Abdul Rahman in 1985 and they are blessed with three children: two sons and a daughter – Mohd Ridhwan bin Mohd Ali, Wan Nadzirah binti Mohd Ali, and Muhammad Hamka bin Mohd Ali.
