HER EXCELLENCY TOH PUAN DATUK WIRA (DR.) HAJAH ASMAH BINTI AB RAHMAN

Her Excellency Toh Puan Datuk Wira (Dr.) Hajah Asmah binti Ab Rahman D.C.S.M., B.K.T., P.B.B. was born in Muar, Johor on 27 November 1955. She is the eighth (8th) of fifteen (15) siblings.

From 1962 to 1967, Her Excellency received her early education at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Bakri Batu 2 1/2, Muar, Johor, and in 1973, she successfully completed her Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Muar, Johor.

Her Excellency was solemnised in marriage with His Excellency Tun Seri Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam on 28 April 1984 and they are blessed with three (3) children — two (2) sons and one (1) daughter: YBhg. Datuk Mohd Ridhwan bin Mohd Ali, Puan Wan Nadzirah binti Mohd Ali, and Encik Muhammad Hamka bin Mohd Ali.

As the wife of the former Chief Minister of Melaka from December 1999 and currently the wife of His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka, Her Excellency Toh Puan is actively involved in associations, organisations, and community activities, especially in the development of women in the State of Melaka. Among the positions she has held are as follows:

• Chairperson of the Association of Wives of State Assemblymen (BISTARI) Melaka from 1999 to 2013
• First Deputy of the Women’s Institute (WI) of Malaysia
• Chairperson of the Women’s Institute (WI) of Melaka
• Chairperson of the Council of Women’s Organisations Melaka (NCWO)
• Chairperson of Seri Murni Badminton Club (KBSM), Melaka
• Chancellor of Geomatika University College

In recognition of her role and contributions as the wife of a Chief Minister, particularly in understanding the role and responsibilities of a husband who sacrifices his time and energy for the State of Melaka, Her Excellency was awarded the title 'Tokoh Ibu Melaka' (Melaka Mother Figure) in 2014 through the Women and Family Development Figure Award in conjunction with the National Women’s Day celebration.

Her Excellency was awarded the Youth Service Medal (P.B.B.) during the Honours and Decorations Award Ceremony by the Melaka Youth Council (MGBM) in recognition of her service and contributions. Subsequently, she was also conferred the Meritorious Service Star (B.K.T.) by the State of Melaka.
